Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants? What Denver Patients Should Know?

Dental implants have revolutionized the way we restore lost teeth – offering a solution that looks, feels, and functions like the real thing. You may be excited about the idea of getting an implant, but wonder: “Am I a good candidate for dental implants?” This is one of the most common questions Denver patients ask. In this article, we’ll outline the key factors that determine implant candidacy and how we address potential challenges.

General Health Considerations: The ideal implant candidate is in good overall health. Certain systemic conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes or immune-system disorders, can interfere with healing. However, controlled diabetes or well-managed health issues usually do not prevent implants. We will review your medical history thoroughly – including medications – to ensure there are no red flags. If you take medications like bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis), or blood thinners, we’ll coordinate care with your physician. Most healthy adults, whether 30 or 70, can successfully receive implants. Age itself is not a barrier – seniors in their 80s and 90s have gotten implants – as long as health is stable.

Jawbone Volume: Dental implants need sufficient bone structure to anchor into. After a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area tends to shrink over time. If it’s been many years since tooth loss, you might have some bone loss. The good news is, modern dentistry has solutions. We use 3D imaging (CBCT scans) at our Denver office to assess the exact bone volume available. If an area is too thin or low in height, procedures like bone grafting can often rebuild the bone to make implants possible. Grafting might involve adding bone material and letting it heal for a few months before implant placement. In some cases, shorter or narrower implants can be used in limited bone. When you come for an implant consultation, bone evaluation is a key step. Don’t assume you can’t have implants – advances in grafting and implant design mean we can work with many situations.

Gum disease can cause bone loss and would put an implant at risk. Our team will check your periodontal health; we may recommend a deep cleaning or other gum treatments to ensure your foundation is healthy. Once an implant is placed, maintaining excellent gum health is crucial for long-term success. Patients with a history of gum disease can still get implants – but they must be diligent with home care and regular dental visits to keep the condition from returning.

Smoking and Implants: Smoking is a known factor that can reduce implant success rates. Nicotine constricts blood flow, impairing healing of the bone and gum. Smokers also have a higher risk of infections (peri-implantitis) around implants later on. We strongly advise quitting smoking before undergoing implant surgery, and in the critical healing months after. If quitting is difficult, even reducing and avoiding smoking for 1-2 weeks before and after surgery can help. We won’t say “no” to implants if you smoke, but we will have an honest discussion about the risks and how to mitigate them. Many patients use getting an implant as motivation to quit – a win-win for their oral and overall health!

Number of Missing Teeth: Implants are incredibly versatile. Whether you’re missing one tooth, several, or all teeth, you could be a candidate. For a single missing tooth, one implant with a crown suffices. For multiple missing teeth in a row, a few implants can support a bridge. Even patients with no teeth can get implant-supported dentures (for example, 4-6 implants to secure a full arch of new teeth). During your consultation, we’ll tailor a plan to how many teeth you need restored, and discuss options like “All-on-4” implant dentures or individual implants. Cost and treatment time can vary depending on the number, but from a candidacy perspective, there’s usually a solution for every case.

Patience with the Process: Getting an implant is a multi-step process that takes several months. After the implant is placed, it often needs to heal and fuse with bone for 3-6 months before the final crown or denture is attached. If you’re someone looking for an instant solution, we will explain why this healing period is critical to long-term success. There are some cases of “immediate implants” or “teeth in a day” for qualifying patients, but those are exceptions and require very specific conditions. Most patients need to be okay with a temporary solution (like a flipper tooth or gap) during healing. If you have the patience to follow through, the result will be worth it!

0388082001755969714.jpgConsultation – Your First Step: The best way to know if you are a candidate is to come in for an implant consultation. At Accord Dental, we’ll perform a thorough exam, including any necessary X-rays or scans, and discuss your goals and concerns. We’ve helped many Denver patients who initially thought implants weren’t possible for them. With careful planning and any preparatory steps (such as bone grafts or sinus lifts), we’ve achieved successful outcomes.

In summary, most people who desire dental implants can become suitable candidates with proper management. If you’re interested in dental implants, don’t hesitate to reach out. Schedule a consultation with our team – we’ll guide you through the requirements and create a personalized plan to restore your smile with implants if they’re the right choice for you.
